A rare shrub or small tree of wet hammocks and swamps in Volusia and Marion Counties south into Osceola and Polk Counties.
The aromatic leaves are alternate, elliptic and entire, lacking a sharp tip and typically clustered near the ends of branches. The flowers are cup-shaped, made up of 12 to 15 tightly overlapping yellow to yellow-green tepals, 6 to 7 stamens and less than 2cm (3/4 in.) across. The fruit is a star-shaped aggregate of up to 13 follicles, each containing one tiny brown seed.
The genus name Illicium refers to the allure of the plant's aroma, parviflorum means small flowers.
