Swamp tupelo is found in and near the water throughout the southearstern Unites State, west to Texas, north into Illinois and norhteast to New Jersey. Ranges in Florida though the panhandle plus north and central peninsula.

Nyssa sylvatica is a member of the Nyssaceae - Sour Gum family.
