A frequent tree of hammocks and floodplain forests in much of Florida. The range extends throughout much of the eastern United States west into Texas through South Dakota and northeast into Vermont & Massachusetts. Also ranges into Ontario.
A deciduous tree growing up to 20m (66 ft.) tall. The simple leaves are alternate and generally heart-shaped with cordate bases and toothed margins and sometimes with one to three lobes. The leaves of red mulberry are characteristically scabrous (rough) on top. The flowers are greenish elongated clusters. The fruit is also elongated and typically more than 2cm (3/4 in.) long.
