A frequently cultivated plant of landscapes in Florida, naturalized in St. Lucie County. Native to South America, also cultivated throughout the Caribbean.
A large shrubby or tree-like cactus that usually branches near the ground. Distinguished by having stems over 10cm (4 in.) in diameter and typically six or sometimes fewer ribs (ridges). Large whote flowers open at night and remain open for a while in the morning. The fruit is pale red and egg-shaped up to 13cm (5-1/8 in.) long.
